You filed your taxes. You are expecting a refund. Now you are stuck wondering when that money is going to show up.
Here is how to track it without obsessively hitting refresh like it’s a race.
Step 1: Know the timeline
If you e-filed and used direct deposit, refunds usually take about 21 days.
Filed a paper return? It could take 6 weeks or longer. Old-school filing means old-school waiting.
Step 2: Use the official IRS refund tracker
Skip the guessing. Go straight to the IRS refund tracker:
You will need three things:
- Your Social Security Number or ITIN
- Your filing status (single, married, etc.)
- The exact amount of your expected refund
It will show one of three statuses:
- Return Received
- Refund Approved
- Refund Sent
The site updates once every 24 hours, usually overnight. Refreshing it ten times a day will not help.
Step 3: Try the IRS2Go app
The IRS has a mobile app. It’s called IRS2Go and it works just like the website. Same info, easier to check on the go.
Step 4: Watch your bank
Even when the IRS says your refund was sent, your bank might need a day or two to process it. Make sure you are checking the same account you listed on your tax return.
Step 5: If it has been too long
If it has been over 21 days since you e-filed, or more than 6 weeks for a paper return, and you still have not received your refund, call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.
